What Is Telehealth And Is It Right For Me?
Telehealth Appointments allow you to attend therapy from the comfort of your own home, anywhere in Australia. A link is provided to you so that you can log on at your scheduled appointment time to talk with your Psychologist.
Telehealth not only offers flexibility for rural and remote clients, it also offers flexibility for people who work long hours, do shift work or have a busy lifestyle. It is also ideal for new or busy mothers who find it dificult to get organised and out of the house to attend appointments. Clients who travel in to a clinic for sessions can sometimes be using up to 2 hours (or more) out of their day to access their Psychologist. Telehealth allows you to access your psychologist without the stress or expense of travel, and moving around commitments in your busy schedule. Many clients also come to realise the benefit of being in the comfort of their home whilst they are sharing their concerns and vulnerabilities.
Psychological treatment provided using videoconferencing technology has been found to be as effective as a face-to-face appointments for a variety of mental health problems. When seeing a psychologist via telehealth, you can expect to receive the same quality of care, ethical behaviour and standards of practice.
We do however understand that there can be some initial hesitancy regarding telehealth. My tips for combatting this, and having a successful telehealth appointment include:
· A strong internet connection
· Minimised distraction (think: kids, pets, partners, general community)
· A quiet space that’s yours for the full 50 minutes
· A laptop and potentially headphones to help with clear sound
Our appointments can utilise a virtual whiteboard and screen sharing capabilities, where valuable resources can be shared, just as they would in a face-to-face appointment.
